Why this site exists
Search for a Sólheimajökull glacier hike and you get seven listings that read almost identically. Every one of them promises crampons, a certified guide and ancient ice. None of them tells you that the eleven-hour day trip from Reykjavík puts you on the glacier for about an hour, while a four-hour tour from the car park gives you two and a half.
That gap is what this site measures. Price, group size, meeting point, and above all the time your crampons are actually on the ice, which is the number that decides how the day feels and the one no operator publishes.
How we keep it current
In July 2026 the Icelandic Meteorological Office flagged the glacier margin: a new lagoon east of the tongue, an unstable ice bridge over it, and rockfall risk on the south-east approach. Operators cancelled for several days, then reopened on a new track cut around Jökulhaus with the landowners' agreement.
Most pages ranking for this keyword still describe the old route. We rewrote ours within two weeks and stamped it with the date it was checked. When the situation changes again, this page changes with it.
